MFA Critique
ARTDES 606.001, Winter 2025
Credit Hours: 3
Semester: Winter 2025
Description: Students participate in weekly critique groups to develop rigor in their ability to see, describe, assess, understand, contextualize, and discuss their own work and the work of their peers. MFA students are assigned to a critique group that meets once a week for three hours with three or four faculty members and where possible an outside critic. Two students present their work at each session, and each student has the opportunity to present his/her new work once during the first half of the semester and again during the second half of the semester. The work presented is seen as a distillation if not conclusion of the research conducted, as such it is important that each student be prepared to share all the research behind the work, contextual history theory, precedence as well as material studies, iterations. Typically the third hour is left to more open discussion on the issues raised during the critiques, or other pertinent topical issues.
