Fab 3: Bits and Atoms

Prerequisites: All OF THE FOLLOWING: ARTDES 120: Studio: 3D.

Description: This course is an introduction to digital fabrication within the context of art and design. Rapid prototyping technologies are exploding in popularity, and this course aims to balance breadth with depth. Students learn about the numerous types of software and tools available in general and develop proficiency with the specific software and tools at Stamps. In addition to learning technical skills, students discuss the current and potential role of digital fabrication in creative fields and participate in regular critiques. To model their ideas, students receive an overview of computer-aided design (CAD) software and then focus on Rhino and Fusion 360. To execute their ideas, students learn about the many digital fabrication technologies available and design and build their own projects using Stamps’ laser cutters, vinyl cutters, 3D printers, and CNC mills/​routers, culminating in a final project of their choice that integrates these processes.

Frequency: This course is typically offered in every fall term as well as in the winter term of odd-numbered years, though scheduling may vary according to future term circumstances.
