ARTDES 206.001, Fall 2024

Details

Credit Hours: 3
Semester: Fall 2024

Prerequisites: All OF THE FOLLOWING: ARTDES 100: Any 100 Level Studio.

Description: This course introduces students to the basics of garment construction, with an emphasis on the experimental, critical and artistic exploration of the medium. It begins by teaching basic sewing techniques, including the use of the sewing machine, and proceeds to show essential skills such as pattern drafting and draping. By the end of the course students are able to design and construct simple pieces of clothing. Throughout the semester, films, readings and critiques help students build their conceptual understanding of the medium and enable them to engage critically with it. As an art studio course, students are expected to bring their own artistic and design sensibility when conceptualizing and realizing their assignments. Their evaluation will be commensurate to their ability to communicate this artistic vision through their making.

Frequency: This course is typically offered in both the fall and winter terms of every academic year, though scheduling may vary according to future term circumstances.
