Description: This multi-disciplinary course is intended for students interested in work that centers on the concept of “The Body.” This is not a course to experiment in unfamiliar media. Students in this course should have technical competency in their chosen media. They perfect their skills in that media and use it to refine the concept in their work. They create well-crafted, professional work that incorporates interests and issues from courses outside of Stamps. The work may be about politics, beauty, gender, sexuality, cultural criticism, power, prosthetics, extreme fashion, body modification/transformation, health, etc. Students are exposed to media and ideas that may be unfamiliar to them. They learn to find a starting point for discussions and critiques and use the new knowledge to inform their own work. There is time for rigorous iteration, discussions and talks with contemporary artists. Critical and theoretical readings are included to provide students with the knowledge and ability to contextualize their own work and that of others.
