Prerequisites: All OF THE FOLLOWING: ARTDES 243: Intro to Animation. OR PERMISSION OF INSTRUCTOR.

Description: This intermediate course puts the experiment” back into experimental animation. Students approach each assignment as a lab, and they investigate a range of analog and digital animation techniques from flipbooks, drawing, rotoscoping, and stop motion to sand, clay, and digital compositing. For the purposes of this class, animation is defined as moving images created by any means except live action.” Students create short works (under 2 – 3 minutes) in their own artistic voice and are encouraged to experiment with non-traditional narratives and non-narrative forms. Readings, research, visitors, and field trips provide students with a greater understanding of the history and development of experimental animation and its current role in contemporary visual culture.

Frequency: This course is typically offered in the fall term of every academic year, though scheduling may vary according to future term circumstances.
