Writing in Art and Design

Prerequisites: All OF THE FOLLOWING: ARTDES 129: First Year Writing in Art and Design. OR PERMISSION OF INSTRUCTOR.

Description: This is a Stamps academic course and will not fulfill studio requirements. In this course students practice the skills required to write specifically in the fields of art and design. Writing in visual fields requires a unique set of skills in order to clearly articulate the concepts and contexts that are important to an artist’s work. This course challenges students to investigate their own creative interests, the work of artists and designers who have influenced them, and topics from other fields that are relevant to their practice. The course covers important genres in art and design writing, including reflection, critical analysis, research writing, grant proposals, and that inescapable document: the statement. In the interest of making these tasks more manageable, students proceed from the perspective that writing is an art in itself with its own artistic elements that can be mastered. Just as students develop a language for discussing composition, color, line, and so forth, they learn to break down the formal values of writing, such as description, analysis, word choice, argument, etc.

Frequency: This course is typically offered in both the fall and winter terms of every academic year, though scheduling may vary according to future term circumstances.
