Text reads 10th Naming Anniversary Celebration, with Stamps logo on colorful background

The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design is excited to welcome you to our 10th Anniversary Celebration, which coincides with U‑M’s 2022 Homecoming and Parents and Family Weekend.

September 20, 2022 marks ten years since the naming of our school in honor of Penny W. Stamps for the remarkable gift she and her husband, E. Roe Stamps made to support art and design education at the University of Michigan. We are excited to celebrate this milestone and reflect on the legacy of the school with Dean Carlos Francisco Jackson, who will share his vision for amplifying the impact of art and design in our communities.

All events are planned to be in person with appropriate public health measures in place. Some events may have virtual components.

Originally created for office work, the Riso has since been adopted by artists and designers attracted to its unique printing method, striking colors, and telltale quirks. This workshop will cover the basics of how the Riso works and how to create designs for it. With that knowledge, participants will have the opportunity to create their own designs to be printed on the Riso.

Interlaced with the history of human evolution, weaving is both an ancient art and a mathematical process that served as a precursor to modern computer technology. Comparing handlooms in the Stamps weaving studio with newly acquired digital jacquard looms, this workshop will cover a brief history of textile production as well as fine art applications for this equipment. Participants will learn the fundamentals of woven structures using mini frame looms designed by Stamps alumni Marianne Fairbanks and will leave with a kit of essential materials to continue weaving at home.
