Black Box Starburster

Video Projection Installation - Wooden table, Clear acrylic blocks with mixed media video projected onto them using projectors.

Undergraduate

When do our smart devices stop becoming tools and start becoming weapons? Black Box Starburster is an imitation of a spam bot farm, a system of smartphones yielding fake social media accounts controlled by a central hub. Projected onto cast acrylic blocks are chaotic bursts of social consciousness, an overstimulating hallucination that begs the viewer to keep watching. Governments, businesses, and cybercriminals exploit bot farms to control algorithms. In this system, the phone becomes a tool to monetize engagement and boost AI generated content. The video collage mixes my own imagery with reels fed to me by the algorithm to portray bots doomscrolling in an ouroboros of slop. Our attachment to our phones, like the bot farm, is perpetually tethered. Through this installation, the viewer can be released from that parasitic relationship.
