Beatbox began as an in-depth exploration and critique of music production workspaces. As a music producer myself, I recognized a pressing need for better-designed environments that foster creativity and minimize clutter through intentional, premeditated organization.
Through primary research—including interviews with both peers and professional music producers I admire—I designed a modular, pegboard-like system that could be customized and expanded upon with 3D printed modules catered to a music producer's needs. Initially created to organize studio essentials like microphones, sticky notes, water bottles, and charging cables, the system has quickly enabled a modeling phase for me to support headphones, keyboards, and speakers. The pegboard architecture allowed for any gear and charging cables to be run through the desk itself, allowing for a clean desktop with clear visibility and control over one's own organizational methods from within.
The physical construction of Beatbox—from its knock-down furniture joinery and laser-cut acrylic top to its hand-painted surfaces—uplifts a blend of traditional craftsmanship and digital fabrication. Every detail underscores the project’s roots in both hands-on craftsmanship and digital fabrication.
Beatbox embodies a vision of optimized creativity in the music production space, empowering producers with the freedom to define their own organizational logic and workflow.
