A digital self-portrait rendered in charcoal depicts a Mexican man facing forward, looking upward with an expression of sorrow, slight tears streaming from his eyes. Wrapped around his mouth is the American flag, symbolizing the dark essence of being silenced by U.S. government officials. Surrounding his head are words reportedly flagged or banned by the Trump administration, including Hispanic, Ethnicity, Activism, Men, Mental health, Equality, Latinx, Immigrant, Noncitizen, Race, Minority, and Diversity. The subject’s clothing further reflects the artist’s identity: he wears a traditional Mexican garment known as a guayabera, crafted in white fabric with two green vertical patterns running down each side of the chest. A red bow and flower are added to the shirt, introducing additional traditional colors of the Mexican flag. The artwork is composed with deliberate contrast and a warm, monochromatic palette, with the American flag and the guayabera highlighted in color. The overall mood is unsettling, conveying the artist’s struggle to speak and express his identity in the face of restrictions symbolized by the surrounding words organized by the United States government.

Words Unsaid

My work addresses the expression of social issues in contemporary society. It highlights the impact of the Trump Administration’s decision to flag and ban certain words from official government websites. Terms such as immigrant, Hispanic, men, mental health, ethnicity, equality, Latinx, and others that are closely connected to my identity. Learning about this censorship left me feeling silenced, as though I could no longer share my experiences or express my true self. To convey this message, I began by photographing myself wearing a bandana over my mouth. I then digitally transformed the image, turning the photograph into a charcoal-style artwork and replacing the bandana with the American flag. To further emphasize my heritage, I wore a traditional Mexican Guayabera shirt in the portrait.
