"Past Prolapse" is an exhibition featured at the Graduate South Studios in December of 2023 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.In September 2023, I met Kim, a man whose life was enviable to me—filled with countless personas, places, and impressions. He embodied everything I aspired to as a queer person: gay, seasoned, a Brooklynite, a photographer, and someone who lived without regret. Meeting him on the Upper West Side led to five hours in his apartment of curiosities, where he recounted his life through photographs, videos, and anecdotes. This collection isn’t about Kim but draws on what he taught me: the implication of impressions. I explored how queer people impact one another, how interactions are commodified, and how connections are shaped by modern interconnectedness. Using plaster, alginate, and clay, I created impermanent works reflecting queer identity as fluid, manipulated, and multifaceted. “To what extent does the queer self control this trinity?”
