The Interstates Project is a multimedia sustained investigation by William Hohe and Charlotte Watson. Positioned around a 14-state, multi-day road trip and encapsulating the exploration of performance, personas, and character building along Historic Route 66, the artistic pair delve into the death of the American road trip and the state of the nation along its nostalgic mother road.
For our introductory exhibition, featured in the Bloc Gallery in Champaign, the space featured images from each of the 14 states traveled through, each accompanied by roadside graves. Each of the graves represented the passing of time and the “death” of each persona we investigated along the way. Comprising over 60 characters, the quick pace of travel and getting from place to place ended with a need to mourn both time and the passing of the trip itself.
Pictured here is all 14 crosses/grave sites in an installation setting, containing all 14 crosses into a domestic setting/arrangement.
