A shirtless person stands with their back to the camera, set against a dark stone wall partially covered in moss and climbing plants. They wear faded, slightly dirty jeans with a black belt. One arm crosses behind their back and presses a hand firmly into the center of their shoulder blade, creating a visual tension in the veins and muscles. The image evokes vulnerability, tension, and a sense of introspective gesture.

"Of masked & omitted devices" explores queer spaces on chatrooms, dating apps, and platforms for sex and companionship. Inspired by Sex by Madonna, Jake Foster's work, and Webcam Aesthetics, it subverts these digital spaces to reveal the humanity behind the profile. The project challenges how technology shapes queer communication, identity, and ethics, capturing vulnerability, authenticity, and intimacy. It culminates in a photobook, exhibition, and social media publication, showcasing digital personas.

This is Joshua. He is from Great Britain but lives in Italy. He spoke telling words to me like “holiday house” and “bloody” among others. He was sweaty and took me to a local cruising spot, smothered under a river bridge and in the shade.

As the first subject I met through this project in Europe, it was interesting to meet a fellow English speaker abroad. I was struck by Joshua’s openness and willingness to take on the role of this often subjugating and confusing body of work.
