Stoneware ceramics installation, glaze, overglaze, and gold luster
Undergraduate
For the past four years, through my highs and lows, chai has been my constant. It has been my warmth, connection, and home. It's a precious drink that ties me to my South Asian heritage, offering comfort, togetherness, and an invitation to spend quality time with others. No matter who is over, I always ask, "Do you want chai?" Growing up, I saw chai as an act of care, and I continue to use it as a doorway for banter and friendships.
The cups, saucers, and snack bowls are shaped and decorated to represent common South Asian details, while the three-tiered hand tray represents a hand offering chai and snacks. Chai time is short and simple, yet it forms bonds and displays hospitality.
My ceramics chai set symbolizes the common South Asian chai time when warm talks and exciting stories are exchanged. It reflects when a cup of chai becomes a bridge for human connection and experience. My ceramics set is an ode to all of the chai I have had and friendships I have formed through chai the simple question of "Do you want chai?"
