"Arthropods" is a digital design inspired by the biodiversity of the Burren in Ireland, with its unique landscapes and rich ecosystems surrounding the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan. This work builds upon my study abroad experience, exploring the intricate organic forms and textures found within various ecosystems. It primarily focuses on the microscopic world—often overlooked—of local bugs and small creatures inhabiting the grasslands behind the college. These creatures were captured using a net and a pooter, and through careful observation and microscopic photography, their shapes were transformed into a distinctive alphabet.
Incorporating elements of the graphite typeface as its foundation, "Arthropods" extends the work into the digital realm, experimenting with texture, composition, and color manipulation. The original graphite drawings evolved into a cohesive design composition. This fusion of science and art invites viewers to explore the hidden complexities and beauty of the natural world, bridging the micro and macro environments that shape our perceptions.
