A fluffy orangutan known as the Monk looks down at his deep and ancient book under the vines, moss, and leaves of the jungle. His long bony fingers cradle the book with stability. The picture is painted in watercolor and has a soft look.

Encounter with a Monk

“I am a Monk. I sit in the jungle and read my book all day.” My story, Encounter with a Monk follows an orangutan who stays stationary eternally reading books. What happens when the Monk’s bubble pops? Pesky Mosquito and a little rascal monkey, named Vesuvius Quince fly into the Monk’s space and challenge his attention. With much of my work relating to environments and romanticizing nature, the goal for this story was to challenge people living life in stagnation. I aimed to make a book that allows the reader to live vicariously through its characters in a lush setting and inspires them to break away from their routine habits of unhealthy distractions.
