The Violent Truth is an exploration of random acts of violence through three personal memories of my immediate family. Studies show one way which allows people to overcome trauma is through sharing experiences. This series works to illustrate the narratives of trauma that my family has experienced, which serves two purposes: my depiction of their memories through art, and cathartic translation, aiding in the recovery process. As memories are shared, there are always fragments that get lost through translation. This loss of detail in storytelling mirrors the loss of translation from the digital illustrations to the plywood, and again from the artwork in front of you to your own understanding. The edges have been finished with violent swings from a hatchet, then burned as a metaphor of the way that people's lives are permanently altered by these types of experiences.
