I have started creating collages on un-carved woodblocks as a way to combine the two distinct processes that have become part of my art practice while living in New York City: photo collage and relief printmaking. I begin a new piece by arranging discordant images on the wood and then use acrylic paint and carving detail to respond to the random matrix I create. It's a process full of contrast: I have limited space and tools to work with in my studio, but choose to strip away all other boundaries, which results in an automatic making process.
