The development of Western ceramics owes a great debt to Asian ceramics traditions. The interior Qing Dynasty gourd vase is glazed in the yellow color reserved for the emperor and embellished with the five-toed dragon. Encased within the German rococo lidded jar, the gourd vase represents the seed from which the Western form emerged.
