Behind Closed Drawers

The stigma surrounding domestic violence often leads victims to keep things swept under the rug and tucked away into corners, further perpetuating harmful cycles. Along with children’s drawings, I believe that drawers are an important source of household information–a place where things are hidden, cherished, or casually tossed. In “Behind Closed Drawers,” I take inspiration from both the nature of drawers and the coded languages found in children’s artwork to tell the story of a child who uses their drawings in an attempt to understand and “fix” their home.
