The Cabinet

Daniel Draper

Undergraduate

My project is an alchemy cabinet stocked with self-animating potions made from discarded materials. I combined the magic I have in my life with the “traditional” viewing of magic and created this piece to showcase that. The cabinet is who I am. It’s every skill I've learned to piece together lost objects to create something grand. The potions are those who have believed in me and my capabilities regardless of if they “get it” or not. The installation is who I’ve become through this experience.

Throughout my life, I’ve discovered that producing physical objects has been the most effective way to convey my complex ideas and emotions. Although they don’t always understand my creative process, I am very fortunate to have a variety of people in my life who support what I do. Even though this project is my own, I wanted to not only showcase my passion and ability to upcycle but for each supporter to understand the impact they’ve made on me.

My art is my opportunity to be understood, but it’s not merely that. It’s also one-half of what many might refer to as “Magic.” It’s the intersection between art and technology, a gateway between worlds.
