Todd Lefelt: Solo Exhibition in Los Angeles

Todd Lefelt, a man wearing glasses and a black shirt, stands near walls filled with abstract paintings.

Work by Todd Lefelt (BFA 92) is featured in Time Spent, a new solo exhibition on view through February 8 at Robert Szot Studio in Atwater Village, Los Angeles. The exhibition features a collection of 21 paintings and mixed-media works on paper created over the past year, ranging from intimate, small-scale pieces to expansive canvases that command the room.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Lefelt was shaped by a Gen X cultural landscape of irreverence, DIY ethos, and resistance to convention. After a long career in technology and design — and a period of self-reflection inspired by the pandemic — he recently embraced the full-time pursuit of his art. Time Spent marks his debut solo exhibition and a pivotal moment in his return to sustained studio practice defined by commitment, persistence, and process made visible.

Lefelt’s approach is informed by the lineage of Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism — artists such as Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Francis Bacon, and Anselm Kiefer — while also drawing from contemporary painters, including Pat Steir, Julie Mehretu, Mark Grotjahn, Bryce Marden, and Robert Szot, with whom he continues to work today. Lefelt’s background in graphic design is evident in the work’s structural clarity, and the influence of graphic artists such as M.C. Escher can be seen in his use of black-and-white line work and his exploration of illusory, paradoxical space.
