Stéphanie Morissette's Solo Exhibition at Minéro Musée de Thetford
A solo exhibition by alumna Stéphanie Morissette (MFA ’24) is being presented at the Minéro Musée de Thetford — KB3 in Thetford Mines, Canada, until October 7, 2024.
Lac Noir — Black Lake is a compelling video and photo installation that offers a unique perspective on the history of Black Lake, which was drained in the 1950s for asbestos mining. The work is enriched by the memories of witnesses who experienced the lake’s transformation. This poignant installation is situated on the unceded territory of the W8banaki nation, the Ndakinna, in the town now known as Thetford Mines, Québec, Canada.
Presented at the KB3 — the historical center of the King mine — the exhibition is housed in an old industrial building that serves as a stark reminder of the working conditions in a region marked by both open-pit and underground asbestos mines. Stéphanie’s work features a series of sequential photos juxtaposing images of Black Lake before, during, and after its exploitation. Accompanying the visuals is an experimental documentary featuring audio recordings of her family members reminiscing about the lake.
Don’t miss this evocative and thought-provoking exhibition that delves into industrial activity’s environmental and human impacts on Black Lake.
