Sophia Brueckner and Science Fiction at 4S/EASST and Hangar in Barcelona
Stamps Assistant Professor Sophia Brueckner will be exhibiting her sci-fi inspired prototypes, the Empathy Box and Empathy Amulet, in An Evening of Platforms, Prototypes, and Multimedia Experiments in Action, on Saturday, September 3 from 6 — 9 pm at Hangar Visual Arts Center in Barcelona.
Extending the 4S/EASST 2016 theme of science and technology “by Other Means”, the evening will feature an open demo space of multi-media and interactive projects by conference participants and local artists and activists in Hangar’s artistic and research community, who adopt diverse alternative formats to explore and experiment with science, technology, and the arts.
Brueckner will also be running “HAPLAB: A Horror and Possibility Sci-Fi Workshop”, a workshop at 4S/EASST as part of the “Innovation, Economic Driver, Disruption: Utopias and Critiques of Making and Hacking” track.
“A good science fiction story should be able to predict not the automobile but the traffic jam.” — Frederick Pohl
Reading sci-fi is like ethics class for inventors and designers. To encourage a long-term and critically optimistic view of technology, workshop participants will write 1‑sentence sci-fi stories.
