Richard Sears: Solo Exhibition

Sears6

A&D Professor Emeritus Richard Sears is featured in a solo exhibition from Oct. 19 through Nov. 24 at the West Island gallery in Georgetown, Maine.

Splashes of rich color dance across the paper and canvases of Richard Sears, visible in his solo show, opening Friday, October 19th at 11 Centre Street in Bath. The largely recent work ranges from local landscapes, such as the scenic overlook at Thorne Head, still lifes of flowers, and evocations of snow-thaw patterns and rural Maine scenes. The show will be available for browsing and purchase from October 19th through November 24th, Wednesday through Saturdays, noon until 6 P.M. The opening on Friday the 19th will be from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M.

Sears, a resident of Bath for nearly twenty years, taught painting and drawing at the University of Michigan for 35 years. His work has been shown in Maine, Michigan, Iowa, and California and is represented in museums both in Michigan and California. But for Richard Sears, the importance lies in the seeing. He finds the sacred in the rocks and trees, water and skies of Maine. In his teaching, Sears sought to communicate his belief in the power of close and repeated observations, where beauty is not just in the exotic, but, also, in the everyday. His work embodies those ideas.

West Island Gallery’s temporary exhibition space at 11 Centre Street will be full of those observations of Maine, and a few of California and Michigan, beginning October 19th. This special exhibition will continue for just over five weeks, through November 24th, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Come to meet the artist, join the celebration, and experience the power and whimsy of Sears’ observations at the opening on Friday, October 19th from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M.
