Professor Stiles New Sound Project
Jesse Stiles, a new faculty member, presents “Live at Studio B,” a feature-length music film and album recorded in a single take at WQED in Pittsburgh in July 2023. This project reflects six years of genre-defying performances and daring experimentation.
With his ensemble Bombici, Stiles delves into spontaneous composition, crafting a rich sonic journey that merges electronic processing with live instrumentation. The album showcases saxophonists Ben Opie and Patrick Breiner, guitarist Colter Harper, bassist Ryan McMaster, and percussionists Rich Randall and Jonathan Heins, pushing the boundaries of musical form.
The film flies the viewer throughout the performance, capturing the performances from a dizzying array of angles, from micro to macro, and presents the resulting images with analog-style video processing informed by pioneers of video art such as Nam June Paik and Laurie Anderson.
Bombici’s sound merges American jazz, hard rock, and global folk traditions into a dynamic and unpredictable mosaic. From the intricate rhythms of Balkan folk to the raw energy of New York’s 70s no-wave scene, the music is marked by innovation and depth. The lead single, “Harmattan,” transforms its Ghanaian funeral music roots into a hopeful, forward-looking anthem.
Immerse yourself in this visionary fusion of experimental music and video.
