This month, Stamps alumni Leslie Sobel (BFA 83) and Laura Cavanagh (BFA 11) are displaying their work as part of the ongoing Gifts of Art exhibition. Gifts of Art brings the work of visual artists and musicians to Michigan Medicine with the hope of nurturing and engaging those who are dealing with stress and illness. Find more information on Gifts of Art here.

Sobel’s contribution to Gifts of Art consists of mixed media boxes – utilizing painting, monotype, photography, resin and encaustic – that capture memories of places being altered by climate change. Her work was inspired by her time spent camping out in an ice field with climate scientists while she served as the artist in residence at Kluane National Park in Yukon Territory, Canada. For more information on Sobel, please visit her website.

For her part, Cavanagh contributed oil and chalk pastel works that examine quiet, intimate spaces. Inspired by her own experience as an introvert to whom space” and the preservation of personal space are extremely important, she creates an atmosphere of still quietude in her work. The work of both artists will be on display from December 16, 2019 – March 62020
