Katie Shulman and Jessika Edgar on NCECA, Ceramics x Fiber Exhibition in Detroit
Ceramics x Fiber: Spotlighting Detroit’s Collaborative Craft Community at NCECA brings together 120 artists — primarily from the Detroit-metro area — for a large-scale, collaborative exhibition presented during Volumes, the 60th Annual Conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), taking place March 25 – 28, 2026, in Detroit, MI.
Organized by artists Jessika Edgar and Katie Shulman (Stamps Alumni Relations and Community Engagement Manager, BFA ’10), the exhibition centers on newly forged creative partnerships across media. Sixty artist pairs — each consisting of one ceramic artist and one fiber artist — were thoughtfully matched to establish new cross-medium connections. Each pair was invited to collaborate on new work or create intentional pairings of existing works, resulting in an inclusive exhibition that highlights dialogue, experimentation, and the strength of Detroit’s craft community.
On Monday, March 23, April Baer interviewed Edgar and Shulman about the exhibition on Stateside, a Michigan Public program (Listen on Spotify). You can also learn more about Ceramics x Fiber in a recent Runner Magazine interview.
In conjunction with the exhibition, a written publication will be produced to contextualize and archive the project, documenting the collaborative process and the relationships formed through this cross-disciplinary exchange.
