Jill Ault

My childhood was spent on the shores of Lake Huron, walking the beach and swimming. Transparency in it’s many forms — air, glass, and especially water — is seductive. I’m interested in pattern — as a repetition of a motif. Think of waves and pine boughs. I work with pattern produced by the hand, not by mechanical means. I love how a motif is repeated identically at first glance, but on examination is a little bit different with each repetition. This new body of work expresses my history, my love of pattern and the reverence I have for water.

Water, in the form of oceans, lakes, and rivers, has always been a part of my life, therefore, landscapes with water are something I relate to in a very personal way. Moving water is both tentative, malleable, and may twist and shift. Color and light inspire me to create moods and emotions in my work and, hopefully, will stir the moods and emotions of the viewer as well. With this body of work, I hope you will not only see, but feel, the changing qualities of moving water just as I have throughout my life.
