Jesse Stiles Leads Media Design for "Open Machine" World Premiere

Stamps Associate Professor Jesse Stiles is the Media Designer for the world première of Open Machine, a new multimedia dance performance by acclaimed choreographers Rashaun Mitchell + Silas Riener. The production opens NYU Skirball’s Fall 2025 season in New York City, with performances on September 19 and 202025.

Open Machine is co-commissioned by NYU Skirball and the Walker Art Center, and brings together nine dancers with a team of collaborators to explore the convergence of human and technological movement. The piece features projected imagery, responsive audiovisual systems, and a sweeping sound score by Mas Ysa and Charmaine Lee, with Stiles’ media design amplifying and reacting to the evolving choreography.

The project has been made possible through generous support from the University of Michigan’s Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and the Stamps School of Art & Design, highlighting U‑M’s commitment to advancing experimental performance and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Première performances will take place at NYU Skirball, 566 LaGuardia Place, New York, NY 10012. Tickets ($42 – $57) and more information are available at nyuskirball.org.

Following its New York première, Open Machine will tour in 2026 to the ICA Boston (April 24 – 25, 2026) and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (May 29 – 302026).
