Holly Huges Premieres New Solo Piece in Chicago
Holly Hughes premieres a new full length solo piece: “The Dog And Pony Show (bring your own pony)” at the New Victory Theater in Chicago on March 18 ‑21 as part of the “Fresh Squeezed” series. Written and performed by Hughes, the piece is directed by Dan Hurlin, a 2010 recipient of the “USA Artists Fellowship” and a 2007 Penny W Stamps Speaker. Hughes blends autobiography, animal behavior, and bald faced lies into a poetic meditation on a midlife crisis in the key of canine, discovering that as we age, the thin membrane that divides the animal from the human dissolves entirely. After several years as a self described “professional homosexual,” preaching to the perverted and giving the religious right something to worry about, she disbands her dog and pony show, takes a real job at a prestigious university (hmmm?) and acquires a small pack of dogs, or a pack of small dogs and asks herself: what is the sound of one lesbian clapping?
