From Stamps to Adidas: Shane Ward’s Journey in Design and Mentorship
As Senior Design Director at Adidas, Stamps alumnus Shane Ward (BFA’96) oversees a team of creative professionals who manage every facet of the company’s Originals Running line — working at the intersection of cultural relevance, innovation, and performance to create footwear that connects deeply with consumers.
In this video profile, Shane reflects on the unique path he’s taken from Detroit to Bavaria — a journey shaped by his time at the University of Michigan’s Stamps School of Art & Design, where everything fell into place during an initial campus visit. “That’s when the light bulb went off for me… someone like myself, who loves to draw and use my imagination, could sketch solutions for people and the industry and have it come to market.”
At Stamps, Shane found mentors, created connections, and honed his industrial design skills before going on to an incredibly successful career designing shoes both in-house and freelance for brands such as Adidas, Puma, Converse, Fila, Rockport, GH Bass, and more. An established leader in the design industry, Shane brings the same passion to mentoring emerging designers that he does to creating innovative, culturally resonant footwear. We caught up with Shane during a visit back to his alma mater for the Jain Industry Partnerships Program, an initiative that brings key alumni with incredible industry experience to campus, pairing them with Stamps students to engage in impactful learning, networking, and mentorship opportunities.
“Coming back and facilitating workshops is about sharing that knowledge — lifting as you climb, and hopefully inspiring the next generation of great designers and great artists,” he says. “If there’s any way that I could spark any type of love, passion, or direction to a student that doesn’t know exactly what they want to do, then I’m doing my job to humanity. It’s something I truly believe in, because I’ve received that spark in my past and I know how impactful that could be.”
