This spring and summer, Stamps Professor Endi Poskovic is participating in the Artica Svalbard artist-in-residence program. Artica Svalbard is one of Norway’s leading arts and culture organizations, offering an interdisciplinary guest residency program on Spitsbergen Island in the Svalbard and Jan Mayen Archipelago, the northernmost permanently inhabited region on Earth.

Renowned for his evocative work that intersects printmaking, memory, and environmental consciousness, Poskovic is using this unique residency to launch Field, a new two-phase printmaking project. Field explores how landscapes — both external and internal — shape memory, narrative, and identity. Immersed in Svalbard’s stark beauty, shifting climate, and complex histories, Poskovic will gather research, sketches, and impressions that will inform a new body of colour woodcut prints. The first phase of this work unfolds in Svalbard in May-June 2025; the second phase will culminate in his Ann Arbor studio from August 2025 through September 2026.

Building on the visual language established in his acclaimed series Majestic and Crossing, Field marks a significant continuation of Poskovic’s exploration of the fragile relationship between place, memory, and environmental transformation. His approach connects distant geographies through layered, hand-crafted imagery that speaks to both the personal and the planetary.

Artica Svalbard’s residency program offers a singular opportunity for artists, writers, and researchers to engage with the extraordinary Arctic environment, fostering artistic and cultural exploration in the High North. The residency supports both Norwegian and international creatives by providing time, space, and resources to focus deeply on research and the development of new work.

Artica’s interdisciplinary residency welcomes not only visual artists but also those working in writing, critical theory, and science. Through this platform, Artica encourages a wide range of voices and disciplines to engage with urgent issues affecting the Arctic and beyond, including climate change, geopolitics, migration, and cultural identity.

By creating space for artistic reflection and dialogue, Artica Svalbard seeks to raise awareness and foster new understandings of the Arctic. The organization’s mission is to challenge conventional perspectives, stimulate critical discourse, and inspire meaningful change through cultural engagement.
