Clara DeGalan and Ryan Herberholz: "Dumb Supper" Artist Talk and Closing Reception
Work by Stamps alumni Clara DeGalan (BFA ’02) and Ryan Herberholz (BFA ’12) is featured in Dumb Supper, on view through December 13 at Office Space Gallery in Detroit.
Dumb Supper refers to an ancient Celtic tradition of hosting a meal that is prepared and eaten in silence. The practice is often observed near the Samhain Festival where the Celts believed the veil between this world and the other-world was very thin.
This three person show explores themes that resonate with autumn — the bounty of nature in harvest season, the liminal spaces where portholes between worlds open, and a sense of the uncanny. The artists work with flashes and ideas of landscape and dwelling filtered through the uncanny valley, as we might gaze through a veil into another realm that resembles ours, but with obscured landmarks. Themes of loss, wonder, locality, initiation, and fairy tale thread through various media and bodies of work.
