Charlie Michaels Selected to Exhibit in New York

From March 4 — March 30, a project by graduate student Charlie Michaels will be exhibited at Apex Art in New York in their gallery and featured on their website.

Charlie, in collaboration with German artist Hannimari Jokinen, recently ranked second out of 243 project proposals from 63 countries in Apex Art’s ​“Franchise Two” competition. Charlie and Hannimari’s project proposal, ​“Re-Painting the Red”, is an expansion of a project executed in Kumasi, Ghana during summer 2009 seeking to subvert unfair corporate advertising in Ghana that brand the homes of local residents without payment. Working with local families, corporate logos are replaced with Adinkra symbols, Ghanaian proverbial symbols of local tradition, culture, and resistance against colonial power.
