Allen Samuels Featured in Innovation Magazine
Emeritus Professor Allen Samuels’ design of a nomadic, solar and rainwater collecting shelter is Included in the 2010 Summer issue of the Industrial Designers Society of America’s magazine, Innovation. The unit is intended to assist people without shelter, water or electricity. It consists of a seamless, plastic reservoir at its center. Attached are two flat panels that when rotated upward and locked, collect solar energy and rainwater and function as a temporary shelter. The collected solar energy is processed and can energize a radio, internal and external lighting and a computer. Collected rainwater is dispensed by an integral spigot at the bottom of the reservoir. When the reservoir is empty, the entire unit can be made mobile by lifting one end and rolling the unit on integral wheels found on the other end.
