Advanced Animations Projects students Exhibit in "On the Move"
Work by Stamps students in Avery Lawrence’s Advanced Animation Projects course (ARTDES 432), including video, framed prints of 3D renderings, and 3D prints, is on view through August 18 in Pierpont Commons on the University of Michigan’s North Campus.

In the Winter 2025 term, Advanced Animation Projects students participated in a 2‑day workshop called “On the Move.” Led by YONK, an animation studio based in The Hague, Netherlands, this workshop invited students to take “the speedy journey of creating weird and wonderful ‘moving machines’ using Virtual Reality Sculpting software and custom animation tools in the 3D program Blender.” The resulting works on display in the exhibition include video, framed prints of 3D renderings, and 3D prints.
YONK says: “Our innovative approach to this technology has resulted in a unique style that seamlessly combines raw, childlike sculpting with polished, vibrant veneers. Our goal is to break free from traditional 3D norms and craft work that’s playful, maximalist and delightfully strange.” In the workshop, the students embraced YONK’s techniques and approach to making as they experimented with a new medium.
This exhibition celebrates the students’ work and highlights an intercontinental collaboration between the Stamps School of Art & Design and a pioneering animation company.
Special thanks to the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching, the Arts Initiative, the Stamps School of Art & Design, Pierpont Commons and the staff at Duderstadt’s Visualization Studio for supporting this workshop and exhibition.
