Since 1998, Latvian independent animator Signe Baumane has made 15 controversial animated shorts on the subjects of sex, underage pregnancy, dentists, veterinarians and madness. In 2014, she released her first feature-length animated film, Rocks In My Pockets, an autobiographical work that explores the depression that has haunted three generations of women in her family. Baumane’s films have been screened at film festivals around the world, and have received numerous awards. Rocks in My Pockets was selected as the Latvian entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards.

Signe Baumane’s presentation will be followed by a 7:15 pm screening of Rocks in my Pockets at the Michigan Theater. Tickets available at michigantheater.org.

In partnership with the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies, Center for European Studies, Center for Russian and East European Studies, Institute for Research on Women & Gender (IRWG), Chelsea’s River Gallery and the Ann Arbor Film Festival (AAFF).
