No book can hold it: surrealist zinemaking for what may survive

In this time of ecological and social collapse and uncertainty, our old maps of the future no longer seem to fit the world we find ourselves in. As the world changes, how are we being called to change? During this workshop, we will engage in surrealist play in the thickets of our fears, anxieties, stress and grief– bravely facing what we are noticing together, creating spaces for new selves and new futures to become sensible. Each participant will create an 8 page zine using collage, creative writing, and handmaking. These zines can be copied and distributed to connect with others around our particular noticings and intuitions in this time of collapse and transformation.

Prior experience is not required, all supplies will be provided. Free and open to the public. Limited space available, registration required. Each workshop is presented as an individual session; participants are not required to attend both sessions. This Be Well session is presented in partnership with the U‑M School of Public Health, Arts Initiative, and Stamps Gallery.

About the Artists:

The workshop will be facilitated by Bridget Quinn & Owólabi Aboyade, stewards of AWE Society Press and the Therapeutic Edgelands. Together they have produced collaborative publications that explore creative practices for transmuting chronic pain, and literary & visual culture emerging from grassroots Detroit-based environmental and social justice movements, as well as poetry chapbooks. Owólabi is the former co-director of East Michigan Environmental Action Council, now a writer, spiritual coach and hip hop artist. Bridget is an environmental performance artist and activist turned zinemaker and indie publisher.
