ARTDES 248.001, Winter 2027
Credit Hours: 3
Semester: Winter 2027
Prerequisites: All OF THE FOLLOWING: ARTDES 125: Studio: 4D.
Description: Sonic Media introduces students to a broad range of sound-based and audiovisual practices, drawing from experimental music, sound design, and multimedia art and design. Topics include the materiality of sound, spatial audio, image sonification, and reactive installations. Through critical listening, theoretical discussions, and hands-on practice, students explore how sound functions as a transformative medium. Students design, prototype, and present interdisciplinary projects that challenge conventional ways of creating and experiencing sonic work in both art and design contexts. In a format that combines lectures, workshops, peer critiques, and project-based assignments, students cultivate both technical proficiency and creative thinking. By the end of the semester, each student exhibits or performs a work that demonstrates their grasp of sonic concepts, technical skill, and personal expression. This course encourages experimentation, collaboration, and cross-disciplinary engagement, providing a supportive environment for developing a nuanced vocabulary for discussing and deploying sound in art and design.Frequency: This course is typically offered in either the fall or winter term of every academic year, though scheduling may vary according to future term circumstances.
