Gulabi means pink in Hindi. I started by painting this canvas different tones of pink than upon that I layered different colors that represented to me greed, money, envy, property, men, family obligations, violence, being lost, and desperation. Then I sanded by hand searching for the spots of pink below the surface. The spots are the ghosts of the baby girls that died due to female infanticide, girls gone missing due to child trafficking, girls that were raped and them killed for their perpetrators’ crime, woman disfigured by acid burnings, and so many more violent crimes.
