Curriculum Vitae

B.A. Design, University of California Davis

Prerna Dudani is a transnational designer whose work spans geography from Ahmedabad, India to San Francisco, California. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of California Davis with an emphasis on visual communications.

Her collaborations with two thirdspaces, the Conflictorium (Ahmedabad, India) and the Urban Survivors Union (San Francisco, California) challenged her conceptions of what design is and what designers do. At the Conflictorium, she became a social listener and responder—creating workshops and programs on the fly in response to arising needs within the community. With the Urban Survivors Union, she worked to reposition the Tenderloin, the district where San Francisco’s homeless population resides, as a place of community-making and idea generating.

Through her work with ViDi—a data visualization research lab in the Computer Science Department at the University of California Davis—and DiPi—a multidisciplinary center connecting human-centered design with social good—she recognized the degree to which her interest in design was integrated with interdisciplinary work. Often working as the sole designer with a diverse group of stakeholders, such as engineers and activists, she realized first-hand the value of experts putting aside disciplinary conventions and committing to create new ways of making knowledge accessible.
