Curriculum Vitae

BA in English, University of Virginia

Biography

Kristin is committed to deepening her social consciousness and acknowledging and dismantling power and privilege in her design practice. She is a quantum thinker, motivated by disparity and the challenge of constraints. She believes in the ability of human centered design to engage communities and positively impact women and vulnerable populations.

Kristin is a first-generation college graduate. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from the University of Virginia where she minored in Media Studies.

She started her career in New York working in advertising and marketing. As part of a leadership development program, she completed rotations in brand strategy, business development, media buying and planning, and consumer insights. She gained a holistic understanding of the industry while helping brands better understand and reach their consumers. Her work in market research provided a channel for her curiosity and interest in human behavior. She was first introduced to design thinking while tackling the taboo around female sexuality in a Business Fundamentals and Tactics course and again in a User Experience Design course where she addressed the challenges first-generation college graduates face entering the workplace.

Kristin is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (South Africa 2017-2019). She worked with her community to implement health interventions addressing the social and structural drivers of HIV with a focus on girls and women. Her use of Participatory Analysis for Community Action tools helped inform projects and initiatives from a community driven perspective. During service, she served as Chair of Peace Corps South Africa's Diversity Committee supporting volunteers and staff through facilitation and training on intercultural competence, diversity and inclusion.

Through the MDes program, Kristin looks forward to developing and applying her creative practice to reducing inequity. Kristin finds inspiration in emotional vulnerability, nature, and cross-cultural experience.
