John Leyland changed materials and career paths in 1991 when he began undergraduate study as a ceramic arts major. Prior to this, he was involved in the jewelry industry for 15 years as a gemologist, designer, and stone setter in Western Pennsylvania. His undergraduate experiences were enriched as an intern at the Mattress Factory Installation Art Gallery in Pittsburgh and as an exchange student with the Academy of Fine Arts in the Slovak Republic.

During and after graduation, Leyland worked as a production potter and taught ceramics at the Manchester Craftsman Guild in Pittsburgh and at Slippery Rock University. At this time, his work reflected a background of making functional, utilitarian objects. Graduate research at Miami University influenced Leyland to produce larger hand-built sculptural forms based on neolithic artifacts and minimalist geometry.

Leyland joined the A&D staff in 2003 as Ceramics Studio Coordinator. He is responsible for administrative oversight, maintenance and organization of the School’s ceramics studio facility, and provides instructional and technical support for all faculty and students utilizing the facilities.

An artist with a thriving creative practice, Leyland exhibits his sculpture work and continues to make pots. He also teaches ceramics classes at the College for Creative studies in Detroit and for local pottery guilds in Ann Arbor.
