Ruth Spielman Howell: Vestiges of Time

July 31, 2013

Ruth Howell’s (BFA 1973) work will be on display in The Architecture of an Idea: Illustrations and Concepts, an exhibit at the Midland Center for the Arts until September 7, 2013. The exhibit includes work by invited artists from across the country and focuses on those who use architecture as a means of artistic expression.

The series “Vestiges of Time”, included in the exhibit, represents Ruth’s lifelong interest in ancient art and architecture and the connections that exist between the past and the present. The fact that something created by another person’s hands thousands of years ago can survive generations becomes a metaphor in her work for our lives… we are vulnerable yet we endure. “Grandine ai Vincitori”,  a large scale, mixed media piece that the Alumni Show of 2012: “9x9x9: Size Matters” inspired, is part of the series. The architectural images used in this piece are from of the University of Michigan campus and are a symbol for all that has gone before and all that is yet to come. During the process of creating this piece, it became evident that size does matter and that working large presents challenges pertaining to time and space.

After working in watercolor for many years, Ruth’s work has taken new directions as she works large scale and combines classical images and techniques with contemporary methods and materials to create work that is classical in nature yet timeless in content.
