The Attic Dweller
The Attic Dweller, Eleanor Schmitt’s senior thesis for the University of Michigan School of Art & Design, chronicles the struggle of moving permanently away from a hometown. This live performance showcases seven original songs written by Schmitt, as well as an accompanying video piece. The first concert begins at 8:00 PM, and a repeat performance takes place at 9:00 PM.
This event is free and open to the public. The run time is approximately 30 minutes.

Tetra is a disaster relief shelter that is rapidly deployable, collapsible, modular, light-weight, portable, and water-proof.
For The Time Being
I am interested in cultural perceptions of time. My work has been focused on slowing time and motion in order to emphasize a single moment, specifically challenging the movement and flow of liquid materials. The installation will be composed of hundreds of suspended drops of ice, which will melt over the course of the exhibition.
For my senior thesis project I created a series of four wearable objects that serve as cathartic aids to different psychological disorders. My goal is to create empathy for people with mental illness by sharing my empathy with those who view my work.
Interested in natural phenomena and human manipulation, 'Concretely' is an exploration in taming the utilitarian material that is concrete into sculptural seating.
Down by the Water, Immersed in the Forest
Through a series of oil paintings, I am investigating personal histories of the landscapes I have grown accustomed to: re-imagining them through expressive abstractions and distortions. I find that the natural scenery of a location, constantly in flux, becomes more intimate and familiar than the solid structure of a house. My goal is to immortalize this relationship by using specific color palettes, spontaneous brushstrokes, spatial relationships, and layered textures. Executed upon larger canvases that encompass the viewer, the work is meant to suggest elements of the natural world, yet remain rooted in that of the mind and memory.
Ollie & Pearl
In attempts to reconstruct my past, I have extracted memories from old photographs that had been carefully tucked away into albums and boxes by my mother and grandmother. Stored under beds, in closets, bookshelves, and attics, these photographs act as a marker to a past that I may or may not know. Just as memory flees us, only fragments have been left behind. My series of drawings reflect this notion. Lonely, isolated, and without context, they sit, desperate to be found.
Relics of a bird’s past
I have this space inside my head. I see it every night while lying in bed. I am walking through an older house. The furniture is minimal and the walls shaded gray. There is no one home, but there is the feeling of a recent inhabitant. As I continue throughout the house I realize that inhabitant, so mysterious and solemn, is me. Although this is a home I have never lived in, the remnants of my past and current life surface throughout the house in various nest forms. Some are in the cupboard, in the fridge, some on the mantel, the closet, the shower, or hidden underneath my bed. These nests are built from the tangible items pertaining to my life, providing an overwhelming realness to my experiences. This home, this giant nest made for man, is using my history to provide a home for another species.
Seasonal Build is a children’s cooking set that includes cook books and measuring cups, designed to teach them how to use fresh ingredients as well as how to practice environmental stewardship. It also teaches children how to measure ingredients in an easy way with little help from an adult.

Mother and Daughter is a series of abstract pencil drawings that visually represent the complex and emotional relationship that exists between my mother and I.
Somewhere on the Midwestern Plain
This graphic narrative is influenced by the metaphorical qualities of the 1973 spanish film The Spirit of the Beehive. The film examines the sociopolitical climate during Francisco Franco’s dictatorship through a portrait of a little girl and her family. Borrowing from the opening caption in the film, which reads “Somewhere on the Castilian plain”, Somewhere On The Midwestern Plain studies a suburban family over the course of a few eventful days during the early summer of 2003, when America’s war in Iraq is just beginning. A small boy, James, like the character Ana in Beehive, is influenced heavily by the words and images he is exposed to, and his dreams become increasingly disturbing as he withdraws from his parents, who have preoccupations of their own. The illustrative style shifts dramatically with each scene, making even reality seem dreamlike.
The piece of art that I have created is an exploration of arched construction and a reflection on architecture and the skills involved in its creation.

"my Berlin" is a map of my memory of Berlin, Germany. Made entirely of cut paper, this "map" represents a portion of Berlin that I lived and worked in this past summer. It depicts both physical city landmarks and intangible experiences and sensations. The buildings, people and other city fixtures coalesce to create a hybrid vision of a city remembered and a city imagined.

Fairy Tales: Gilded Persecution
Focusing on Grimm Fairy Tales, my sculptural adornments address situations in which female characters' individuality and independence are restrained in some manner appropriate to each story. There is an interesting theme of confinement, passivity and dependence inherent in the female characters of the tales. These traditional themes are altered in my sculptural adornments, making the passive wearer take an active role in resisting the action being forced. The delicate style of the pieces is contrasted with the uncomfortable actions being forced and this comes from a fascination and intrigue with that which is beautiful yet detrimental.
I am creating a series of pen drawings depicting dream landscapes that blend together elements both of reality and fantasy based on places that relate to my home in New Orleans.
"Life itself, when understood and utilized for what it is, is sweet" (Hoff, 6). The flavor of tea can also be regarded as a symbolism of life. The first sip of any tea is bitter but as you let the taste sink in, the aftertaste is sweet. Such if life - bittersweet.
No More Talking
No More Talking is a series of portraits responding to a developing trend of interpersonal disconnect and a general sense of indifference that exists in our behavior as the results of digital technology. The dull, hypnotic expressions in the faces are meant to capture the look of a generation in transition that is interacting with computers at an increasing rate. The portraits of these college aged students are solely lit by computer screens which is meant to create a new physical space, similar to how the internet has evolved into a separate “reality.” Captured in expressions of disconnect, these faces communicate as if they are more absorbed in this cyberspace than the tangible world, touching on the trend of how social skills are being stunted as a result of too much time spent in solitude surfing the internet, playing video games, etc .
Bio-Inspired Jewelry Series
I find myself continually inspired by the patterns, structures, and colors found in various aspects of nature. I believe nature should be used as a point from which to design in various disciplines. The repeated wearing of jewelry creates this intimate relationship and familiarity between the wearer and the piece. I set out to explore using natural structures as an inspiration point to create small metal sculpture that uses the contours of the body. My hope is that wearing such a piece would provoke a deeper understanding of the intricacies of its natural counterpart.
The Evo Series explores the realm between digital and handcrafted furniture manufacturing methodologies. Incorporating digital tools with craft materials, techniques and traditions, the Evo Series, exposes the new possibilities of digital craft.
From the Inside, Out
In collaboration with incarcerated artists, this book shares the experience of working with individuals inside correctional facilities. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing the creative process is not a privilege; it is part of human existence.
The Woodward Dream Cruise is unlike a car collection or any auto show. It’s as though you are stepping back in time. It’s where spectators and cruisers come to celebrate an ongoing love affair with the automobile in the birthplace of the American automobile. Muscle cars and classics ride up and down a 16-mile stretch of the legendary Woodward Avenue through eight host communities including Berkley, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge, Pontiac and Royal Oak, in Southeast Michigan.
GENDERED GIRLHOOD: A FEMINIST REFLECTION OF IDENTITY
Text and photos demonstrate a reflection on events from the past with a feminist perspective. Experiences include influences of femininity, relationships with men, discovering sexuality, and dealing with perceptions of power and control.
My work explores the concepts of morphology, communication through gesture, and the form and surface relationship of ceramic sculpture. I am creating an installation piece comprised of large-scale ceramic sculptures inspired by my natural surroundings and various biological organisms and their life course. I focus on the form and surface relationship by abstracting universal qualities observed in nature and creating a new species of organisms, highlighting the fascinating elements and interconnectedness of our world.
As the King of Hearts says in Alice in Wonderland, ‘Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.’ And while you are doing so, it is ok to feel excited, imaginative, whimsical, etc., as you flip through the pages, following the stories of a boy and his frog, a girl and her garden, a bumble bee and his flower, and a bunch of butterflies. They are children’s books, after all.

Welcome to the Zoo
During a day trip to the zoo, a little girl decides she would like some of the animals home as pets. As she imagines what it would be like to take various animals home, she creates equally impossible scenarios where she encounters reasons she would NOT want these creatures as pets.
When the oxen came to be as a gust of snow wove around their ankles, the warm homes atop their backs discovered for the first time. As pencil met the page, they opened their eyes. A giraffe inspects his neighbor, not knowing he too has a telephone booth on his neck. Once the dachshund’s sat upright, they were aware of their steam engine attributes. As the geese gather passively socializing, the species have accepted their abilities. This series explores an impulse we all have as living creatures to explore and embrace our curiosity. As you greet these hybrids, embrace the contagious nature of their investigation and simply imagine. Just as they address each other, introduce yourself and join in the inquisitive exchange. They would love to meet you.
"Letter Form" deals with typographic form detached from its familiar language context. Typography is not only a system of communicative building blocks, but also a collection of distinct forms. Each letter can be used in conjunction with others to create words, sentences, and so on, which form the basis of written language. It is natural and practical to think of letters as inextricable from language; literacy depends on the recognition of these forms. This letter form study ponders the separation of language and typography: letter forms not meant to be read, but simply to be seen.
Turned OUt is a line of clothing where people wear what’s on the inside on the outside. Each outfit is made out of screen printed patterns based on microscopic parts of the human body, then turned into clothing based on the function of those parts.

An Advertising Story
A fantasy world. An opportunity to choose between a one filled with advertising and one void of it. 600 million tourists visit Times Square every year. In ten years the city of Detroit, one without much advertising, has decreased in population by 25%. Advertising bolsters capitalism, and without advertising, sales and capitalism we would cease to be the innovative culture we are today. These collages create the opportunity to choose between an Adless world or an Ad world without judgment. Each individual piece collaged together to create an illusionistic space, built in modular sections for the saccade movements of the human eye. We naturally compare segments of images through fast shifts in our eyes. These worlds cater to this ability to compare not only entire collages but pieces of them as well, allowing for the optimum capacity to choose between which mosaic you wish to create your life, your world, within.
I am always home, and wherever I go, I carry my house. Each wall stands inside me, determined to be strong. Each window permits a breeze, open to change. Each ceiling imperfect, but always secure. "For Ellie" is a series of explorations in textile collage. The work incorporates antique textiles and modern fabrics together in understated compositions. Sewing is a tradition that has been passed on through generations of women in my family. By stitching a physical union between my late grandmother and myself, I am attempting in many ways, to remain connected with my history.

I am interested in designing bags that compliment users lifestyles and enable more organized interactions with personal possessions. I incorporate recycled materials into my designs whenever possible to show that we can use current resources more efficiently than we do now.

The NEXT Project: Exploring Design Through the Confluence of Art and Technology
It seems the role of designer in the twenty-first century is not to define ourselves through the application of fine form language, usability, and marketing but to navigate the conceptual tension between what is expected and what is possible though emerging technology. I am interested in how the technology of digital fabrication is renegotiating antiquated notions of craftsmanship and want to investigate the discord between manual craftsman ship and mechanized processes.
Play. Lost Memories of a Childhood
Through the process of photolithography, I explored the concept of lost childhood memories using images of my cherished building blocks printed on wood. These assemblies allude to the feelings of loneliness and longing I had as a young child because my younger sister was very ill and, as a result, I was often isolated from her and my parents. This project is a way to recover my childhood memories and find myself in the process.
Autumn Fawn Hernandez
I am investigating people’s reaction to hair when it is not their own or on their body. I have gathered hair form many sources; salons, friends and strangers and used this as a medium to draw the viewer in to a close examination of my obsession. Through the use of water air and light I alter people’s perceptions of this overlooked resource.
My work deals with barriers. The perceived barriers between expression and restriction, analysis and impulse, art and science, meticulous rendering and broad sweeping gesture, fight to find common ground – sometimes melding seamlessly into each other and at other times struggling to overcome strict delineations. Ultimately, it responds to the way we seek, and struggle, to understand biological phenomena using visual media.
How does the form of line capture the essence of a subject? Pens, inks and brushes are my weapons, my translators between the connection I have with my subjects to the quality of line I use to bring their energy and emotion to life. I push the dimensions of a figure, squeezing, tugging, stretching. I pinch and pull the face, changing our perceptions of a portrait to encompass elements of a specific personality and behavior. The relationship of my subjects to me and to each other holds significance in the way they are displayed: larger than life portrayals of people whose influence to me has been extraordinary.
Travelog is a podcast series about studying abroad and traveling. Through the art of storytelling, Travelog communicates the importance of intercultural connectivity and cultural immersion. Featuring stories from students that have recently traveled, each episode underlines the importance of seeking out international experiences. Humans as Parasites
I created a body of work dealing with the destruction of the environment by human actions; I produced a series of illustrations with an underlying metaphor comparing humans to parasites. The illustrations I created impart snapshots in time that focus on certain detrimental activities, such as: genetic experimentation, strip mining, factory run-off pollution, deforestation, and overpopulation.
Do You Know?
The “Do You Know” series uses design to draw attention to particular issues about student health. Design is the tool that makes the content visually interesting, making the audience receptive to the material. Information about how to be healthy already exists, but the moment that creates awareness needs to happen before the viewer is ready to change. Making the decision to create a change in your lifestyle is not something that can be forced upon you; the choice rests with the viewer. Focusing on the behavioral aspects of health, my posters use design to create the moment that prompts change.

ARACHNE: The Origin
My interarts performance piece captured both the universal themes of passion, creativity, diversity and equality, as well as being a personal reflection on my challenges and values with art. The performance was a collaboration between other artist, designers, and performers around campus. The play told an age old creation myth of the Goddess Athena who turns Arachne, the young gifted weaver into a spider. Celebrating different cultures, it included song, dance, drama, masks, and puppets. All of these elements were woven together, just like the purpose and lessons learned in creation myths from around the world weave people together.
Fresco is a medium of classic antiquity that reached its peak during the Renaissance. For my Integrative Project, I have chosen to modernize this technique, which I learned through my study abroad in Rome, Italy, in this painting series titled "Buon Fresco".
Memory Worlds is an exploration of the mind as a series of self contained environments. Memories, influences, and the imagination combine to create worlds of invention and fantasy that surprise and delight the viewer. Behind each door, the possibilities are endless.
Greetings from Huron-Clinton Metroparks
Huron-Clinton Metroparks of Southeast Michigan is a regional park system forming a ring around the greater metro Detroit area. Thirteen Metroparks covering twenty-four thousand acres of natural areas contain about twenty distinct ecosystems that are home to an array of wildlife. I’ve created a series of greeting cards designed to promote Huron-Clinton Metroparks through their circulation of the metro Detroit area. Featuring simple illustrations of the undomesticated inhibitors of these parks, the cards will serve as an opportunity to bring much needed attention to the natural habitats that surround our urban communities.
Ways of Seeing
I love how objects sit next to or stack on top of each other like units on a shelf or people packed like sardines in a commuter train, blending together to form a mosaic of colors. Similarly, topography when viewed aerially appears to be comprised of shapes and color clustered to form what we know are really cities and villages. These divisions create a structural geometry, imposed by the needs of agriculture. My compulsive need for order has shaped the way I look at these things; it causes me to notice squares and rectangles everywhere. This series of paintings is a window into how I see things and is an attempt to illustrate how our personal lens influences the way we organize our lives and all the space within it.
A youth baseball organization, UP! will bring together middle school age children from diverse areas to learn new perspectives. Boys and girls will focus on the life-building skills that are associated on and off the field such as teamwork, goal setting, improvement, hard work, and dedication.
A Light Shines in the Darkness
"A Light Shines in the Darkness" is a series of six painted diptychs that will be installed in the sanctuary of Antioch Lutheran Church in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Each diptych represents a liturgical season or holiday, as envisioned through a verse in the book of Isaiah, which reads: “The people who walked in great darkness/ have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness/ on them light has shined”.
The Attic Dweller
The Attic Dweller chronicles one woman’s struggle with moving permanently from her hometown. Featuring seven original compositions and videos by Schmitt, The Attic Dweller exists both as an installation in the School of Art & Design’s Work Gallery and as a performance in the Duderstadt Center’s Video Studio.
This work uses a custom algorithm with motion capture technology to render the performative arts into static sculptural forms in order to create an aesthetic that focuses on the path of motion instead of on the subjects' figure. This research is presented as a multimedia installation comprised of four sculptures with video support.
If you wrong us, shall we not revenge?
For my IP project I have made 10 images of 10 researchers from different departments who test on animals here at the University of Michigan. I believe it is important to share what is really happening behind windowless walls and advocate to use alternatives to animals. Animals, such as vertebrates (including mice and rats!) have a nervous system, just like us, so they can feel it when cut, burned, and electrocuted. Just because we can’t hear their thoughts doesn’t mean their screams mean nothing. The imagery is animals taking revenge on their typical human attackers. I want to provoke the general public with these images to share my desire to end animal cruelty. The audience will see these images and, I hope, want to learn why I feel this way.
I am one and also two
My project is an installation made up of thousands of ceramic Ginkgo leaves. Using the leaves as a symbol for resilience my piece seeks to convey the balance of seemingly opposing forces. Strong v. Weak. Resilient v. Fragile. Guarded v. Vulnerable. Rather than being two forces on opposite ends of a spectrum each pair is more related than they first appear. We gain strength from being weak and in turn can become weak in an attempt to be strong. In order to overcome hardship we must embrace the constant flux of each force. Only then can balance be achieved.
Imperfection is an essential and inherent aspect of existence. Through this process it has been important for me to work constantly with the uncontrollable aspects of my work, as well as those in my mind.
Mixed Messages is a narrative based on my family’s story, on the experiences and dynamics of an interracial family. My family, like all families, is unique; it cannot represent all interracial families. In addition, our family has been shaped by a particular time period, which has made our experience different from those of families in the past, and it will be different from the experiences interracial families will have in the future.
Double Take: A Graphic Exploration Through the Neighborhoods of St. Louis
In the form of a personal narrative, my project explores various neighborhoods of St. Louis through my own perspective and presents them in a graphic form, showcasing the character of each neighborhood through my conversations and observations about the city. My final piece will be a series of five booklets combining digital graphics with my text.
Parts to Whole
Exploration of colors and shapes in a three dimensional space using threads: Abstract sculptures that hint at the human body by combining colored threads into vibrant skin tones through their arrangement in space. The shapes are inspired by the forms of a woman’s body.

Interference is a multi-channel video installation that delves into the aftermath of sexual assault by telling a series of stories through dance.
REKORD: An Animated Short
A short animation about a German speed trial race car driver in the golden age of European motor racing. When he sets out on a speed record breaking run, he ends up someplace he never expected. Inspired by the life and death of German racer Bernd Rosemeyer whose career came to an tragic end when he was killed attempting to regain the land speed record on the Autobahn in 1938. Student Life Past and Present: A Visual History
The history of student life at The University of Michigan gives us information about the origins of traditions that, while upheld, have lost their stories in the passing of time. This work is a retelling of pieces of this history using visual materials (photographs, newspapers, posters etc.) from the past as well as the present. Designed with a modern approach to visual communication historical events are related to the present in a playful, visually-clear way. This work covers several aspects of student life including social events, football, and student activism in the form of a paperback book.

The repetition of simple shapes, some call it a doodle while others refer to it as systematic drawing, are a way of distraction/form of meditation. However, sometimes it takes over, flows off the page and evolves into something greater.
Who We All Are.
A feather is sustained by the power it holds as part of the wing in flight, without losing its delicate, structural essence as it exists as a miracle in nature. When it is assembled, repeated, and constructed, a feather becomes a wing that creates flight. The dynamic of the individual versus the strength of the whole, where the essence of the feather is in its connection with other feathers. In the words of Lehmah Gbowee, "I am what I am because of who we all are."
El Huevo Que Se Pegó Al Sartén
“El Huevo Que Se Pegó Al Sartén” is an amalgamation of narratives from a past time period. A physical interpretation of a distant yet familiar age is forged by examination of cultural and social references as well as family accounts. A relationship between memory and nostalgia is emphasized through use of artifacts like film, furniture, and décor. The films are a literal projection of memory while tangible objects coalesce to form a nostalgic space far from the present.
This animation is about Floof and Marley, lovers in a relationship. As a result of the argument, Floof leaves. He later realizing that the argument was just a misunderstanding. Floof returns to Marley to apologize but it was too late. Floof didn't regret his decision and was grateful for what he did have with Marley. The life he had with Marley was a happy one.
