The Making of “AER HEAD” : A Comic Series In Progress
Mindy Steffen (BFA 2006)
The story of "AER HEAD" began as a surfer who predicts the future in his dreams, and is continuing to evolve. I started this story when I was at U of M. I picked it back up when I first moved to NYC in 2010 and made a 5 page preview comic (the color pages on the top right). I've struggled balancing freelancing, various jobs, living in NYC, and making time for AER HEAD - sometimes setting it aside for years. I've worked on it a lot in 2017 though, and am writing a formal script, changing lots of things. (Before, I "wrote" through storyboarding Ð the papers on the left.) The far right and bottom inked drawings are going to be the covers if issues #1 and #2 Ð I intend to color them digitally to save time, instead of hand watercolors. I still prefer drawing by hand, as I have more control and it just looks better. This project is the reason for my passion for cartooning, and yet I struggle with the enormity of creating this series. Keep an eye out for my Patreon, where I’ll focus on creating AER HEAD, and you can see the process unfold.
