Joann Kallio (BFA 1979, BA 1979)
My U-M degrees are in graphic design and art history, and I have been working as a graphic designer for General Motors Design for over 30 years. I also explore traditional and experimental printmaking as part of my own work. Subterranean is a collagraph, derived from my ancestor’s heritage as copper miners. In this print, as with much of my work, I like to explore pattern and texture, offset with bolder, simpler shapes, whether the work is graphic design or printmaking.
This work is featured as part of Future Former: An Exhibition of Alumni Work. This exhibition honors the creative work and careers of all Stamps School alumni, creates an aspirational connection between generations of U-M artists and designers and current Stamps students, and inspires reflection during the university's Bicentennial year.
