When we say an important topic is “trending,” we automatically imply its fleeting relevance. While some people believe “hashtag activism” impacts others, generates support, and prompts online research, I worry that it sometimes results in surface-level understanding that ultimately numbs us to the significance of these important topics. This piece highlights the direct relationship between trending topics and millennials’ addiction to scrolling through social media. What will be the long-lasting effect of scrolling through serious, trending social issues on our generation?
