Kim Karlsrud (MFA 2020)
"We are in the epoch of simultaneity; we are in the epoch of juxtaposition, the epoch of the near and far, of the side by side, of the dispersed". — Michel Foucault by way of Lucy Lippard
Using vernacular landscape materials as both medium and subject, Kim Karlsrud explores the dynamics of urban ecosystems at multiple spatial and temporal scales through site-based interventions and multi-media installations. Her work registers overlooked social and ecological processes, while inviting new modes of understanding and interaction between them. HERE highlights the strange beauty that can arise by intentionally blurring the boundaries between the site and non-site, the physical and the representational, the nature of place and the place of nature.
This work is featured in Sometimes Something: The 2020 MFA Thesis Exhibition, on display from March 13 - May 2, 2020 at Stamps Gallery in Ann Arbor.
